BNSF joins legal case against Bellingham coal train initiative

BNSF Railway Co has joined the legal argument surrounding the No Coal! initiative in the Whatcom County Superior Court. Following a brief hearing on July 31st, Judge Snyder granted BNSF’s motion to intervene in the case because of concern about how a ban on coal shipment through the city would impact BNSF daily operations and contracts. This coming Friday, August 3rd, Superior Court Judge Snyder will hear the City’s attorney argue in favor of an injunction that will block the No Coal! initiative and the related “Community Bill of Rights” from appearing on the ballot this November.
